Emotional Trauma & Hawaiian Wisdom: The Forgiveness Power of Hawaiian Plant Medicine
In our Hawaiian healing tradition, we understand that plants offer us so much more than their physical properties.
I want to share with you a story that perfectly illustrates the transformative power of this sacred seaweed. During one of our advanced Ho’oponopono embodied courses, where students learn the beautiful art of four-hand lomi, something extraordinary happened.
Yes, all seaweed is detoxifying for the body, but limu kala specifically carries the energy of forgiveness – what we call the mana of bringing pono, or spiritual alignment, back to our emotional and spiritual bodies.
My auntie Mahi Poe Poe, a kahuna haʻa haʻa and Kahuna lāʻau lapaʻau:, received visions from her grandfather in dreamtime about plant formulations. Her grandfather, also a master of Hawaiian medicinal therapies, would show her how to combine plants and reveal their purposes. Through her partnership with Bioponic – which we visit as part of our Hawaiian Medicinal Therapies: La’au Lapa’au class, we now have access to these sacred plant essences in a form that can travel across the ocean, spreading the arms of aloha around the globe.
When Touch Awakens What We’ve Buried
During that particular advanced course, one student experienced something that initially seemed like a physical reaction but revealed itself to be so much deeper. After receiving the loving touch of multiple hands during our four-hand lomi practice, he became intensely nauseous – not once, but repeatedly over several days.
What struck me was his realization: he wasn’t comfortable with touch. Here was someone who had gone through massage school, spending an entire year giving and receiving massages, yet he’d never fully recognized the extent of his discomfort with physical contact.
“It’s making me question everything,” he shared with our circle. “Even questioning what I’m doing in this profession.”
The Perfect Timing of Healing
Sometimes the universe orchestrates exactly what we need when we need it most. On the day we visited the Bioponic farm as part of the Elements of Hawaiian Healing retreat, they happened to be distilling limu kala. Everyone tried some of the fresh plant essence, but this student – perhaps guided by something greater – ended up consuming about five times more than anyone else.
That evening, his nausea intensified beyond anything he’d experienced before. But this time, as he sat with the discomfort, the whole story emerged. Memories of childhood trauma surfaced – times when he felt powerless to protect his sister, carrying guilt and shame that he’d buried deep in his tissues.
The Medicine of Releasing What We Carry
The timing was no coincidence. Within a week, he would welcome his first child – a daughter – into the world. The limu kala was asking him to look at what he was still carrying and to take responsibility only for what was truly his. Through the Ho’oponopono process we’d learned, he was able to release the guilt and shame that weren’t his to bear.
Preparing for Sacred Responsibility
What moved me most was witnessing how this healing prepared him to step into fatherhood differently. Instead of carrying forward unresolved trauma, he could welcome his daughter as her protector and guardian from a place of clarity and strength.
This is the true medicine of limu kala – it doesn’t just detoxify our physical bodies. It creates space for us to examine what we’re holding onto emotionally and spiritually, offering us the opportunity to release what no longer serves us or those we love.
Honoring the Wisdom of Our Plant Allies
In our traditional Hawaiian way of gathering medicine, we didn’t rely on laboratory testing alone. We went out and asked the spirit of the plant if it wanted to give of its life force, its mana, so that people could heal. We understood that plants have many more attributes than we often give them credit for.
As one of my students beautifully expressed: “I feel like it’s dishonoring to the plant to think that they can only be used for one thing. Just as you or I have so many different talents and attributes to offer our world, plants are exactly the same way.”
The Living Classroom of Healing
This is why I love creating living classrooms where we can experience plant medicine in action. When we witness the profound shifts that occur when someone receives exactly what they need for healing, we remember that we’re participating in something sacred – a partnership between human consciousness and plant wisdom that has existed for thousands of years.
The limu kala experience taught us all that forgiveness isn’t just about letting go of resentment toward others. Sometimes it’s about forgiving ourselves for what we couldn’t control, releasing the stories we’ve carried, and creating space for who we’re becoming.
Whether you’re preparing for a major life transition, working through old patterns, or simply seeking deeper alignment with your authentic self, the medicine of forgiveness – whether through limu kala or the practice of Ho’oponopono – offers us a path back to pono, to that place of spiritual and emotional balance where we can show up fully for ourselves and our loved ones.
