Energy Clearing for Massage Therapists

Massage therapists practicing Lomi Lomi outdoors in Maui, performing energy clearing techniques on a client during a Hawaiian healing workshop.

Are You Absorbing Client Energy? 7 Sacred Lomi Lomi Practices to Stay Clear and Grounded

As massage therapists and healing practitioners, we often show up with open hearts, ready to serve. But have you ever finished a session feeling heavy, drained, or carrying emotions that aren’t yours?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone…and it doesn’t have to be that way. This guide offers energy clearing for massage therapists rooted in the sacred Hawaiian tradition of Lomi Lomi.

In the Hawaiian healing tradition, we recognize that the healing space is sacred. Practitioners are not just technicians; we are spiritual conduits. To serve from this place without becoming depleted, we must care for our own energetic hygiene just as much as our physical tools.

At Ho’omana Spa on the island of Maui, we teach these principles to bodyworkers from around the world. Today, I want to share 7 powerful practices from our Lomi Lomi lineage that can help you stay clear, grounded, and connected to Spirit. Use one or all before, during, and after every session.

Whether you’re a seasoned therapist, energy worker, or just starting your journey, these practices are here to support you.

1. Set the Intention for Energetic Protection

Every healing session begins with intention. Before your client even walks in, set the boundary: No energy shall pass to or from me unless it is for the most high.

This one practice can shift your entire energetic state. You are not here to carry someone else’s pain—you are here to be a vessel for transformation. Clear intention sets the tone for everything that follows.

2. Call in Your Spiritual Support

You are not doing this work alone.

In the Hawaiian tradition, we call upon our ancestors, our guides, our angels, and our guardians of the light. We ask that only beings of the highest light be present in the healing space. We invite their support, not just for ourselves—but for our clients as well.

When their team and your team are working together, Spirit moves freely.

3. Use Prayer and Chant to Clear Energetic Space

Lomi Lomi is praying work.

We begin each session with a pule (prayer) or oli (chant) to create a container of sacred intention. These chants are spiritual invitations. They activate the body, open the energetic pathways, and align us with Source.

One of my favorite blessing prayers is simple yet powerful. It can be used before a session, when you’re feeling off-center, or even to cleanse a room.

4. Mist with Salt and Plant Medicine (Pi Kai Ritual)

In Hawaiian culture, we practice a cleansing ritual called Pi Kai—using saltwater to neutralize and clear energy.

At Ho’omana, we create mists infused with Hawaiian sea salt and native plant medicine. We use these sprays:

  • Before the session to open the space

  • During the session, especially when encountering blocked energy

  • After the session to cleanse the client, the space, and ourselves

Each formula is handmade with intention, using botanicals like noni, lavender, ti leaf, and rose.

Mist yourself, mist your space, mist your client. Let the salt do the clearing so you don’t have to carry it.

5. Cut the Energetic Cord—With Love and Light

As practitioners, we enter a client’s energetic field. When the session ends, it’s vital to step out of that field.

One of the most effective practices we use is an energetic cord-cutting ritual. You can literally sweep your arms in a crossing motion over your heart and say:

“I cut the cord between myself and this client. I release them with love and light.”

You’re not abandoning them. You’re simply handing them back to Spirit for the rest of their healing journey. This keeps you free of emotional residue and empowers your client to continue their path with grace. It’s an important step for keeping the energetic field clear for bodyworkers.

6. Kawele: Perform a Personal Energetic Sweep

After each session, we teach our students to perform kawele, an energetic sweep over the limbs to move energy out of the body and keep the joints open.

In Hawaiian healing philosophy, energy flows from the head to the feet. Using your hands or forearms, swipe:

  • From the shoulders to the fingertips

  • From the hips down to the toes

Then, perform kawele on yourself. Sweep from your own shoulders to fingertips with intention. This clears away any energy that may have lingered during the session and supports your physical recovery.

Kawele is a beautiful act of self-care that restores your mana (spiritual life force).

7. Cleanse with Water and Salt

Your final step is to cleanse—not just with soap, but with sacred intention.

In Hawai’i, we’re blessed with waterfalls and the ocean. But even if you don’t have access to those, your shower can become a sacred space. As the water pours from the crown of your head, visualize it washing away anything that doesn’t belong to you.

Between clients, when you wash your hands and forearms, bring that same mindfulness.

Even better? Use salt soap to enhance the cleansing effect and neutralize any energetic residue.

Salt doesn’t just clean—it transforms. Let it help you release what is not yours to carry.
